Ocular inflammation
Ocular inflammation is a common condition in
the eye and can be caused by a number of different diseases.
Ocular inflammation is caused by the body's
immune system reacting to an infection or injury to the eye. It can occur
anywhere in the eye, but it's most common on the front or back inside of your
eyelid (lens) and on the surface of your cornea.
Ocular inflammation doesn't always cause vision
loss; it's more likely if you have more serious problems such as glaucoma,
open-angle glaucoma, or cataracts.
If you have an eye infection, you may see pus
or blood in your eye (ophthalmic), which is typically red or brown in color.
You may also experience pain or burning when you blink, feel like there's
something in your eye (ocular discomfort), have blurred vision (visual
changes), or have a hard time focusing on nearby objects (visual field
changes).
Flurbiprofen
The main treatment for ocular rosacea is
steroids such as flurbiprofen (Ansaid).
Ocular inflammation is the most common
complication of the treatment of rosacea. It occurs in approximately 15% of
patients and can be severe enough to require medical treatment or even
hospitalization.
The inflammation typically starts as a red,
itching patch on the eyelids or forehead. This may then spread to the cheeks
and nose, causing small blisters in these areas. If this continues, it can
cause pain and swelling around the eyes.
Mechanism of Action
Flurbiprofen is a non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is used to treat pain, fever, inflammation,
and stiffness. Flurbiprofen comes in tablet form and is available in generic
versions.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), flurbiprofen works by blocking the activity of a substance called prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). PGE2 is a naturally occurring substance that helps keep blood vessels open and allows oxygen to flow through them. When this happens, it can cause inflammation in your joints, muscles, or other areas of your body.
Flurbiprofen works in two ways: it reduces the
amount of PGE2 released from your body by blocking its production or it
prevents PGE2 from interacting with cells at the site of injury so you don't
get pain or swelling there any longer than normal.
Which hormone plays a significant role in the signs and symptoms of inflammation
When compared to other NSAIDs, paracetamol has a relatively weak anti-inflammatory effect.
